With the distinctive blue and gold logo and the name “Singapore Airlines” across 33 metres of the aircraft fuselage, the world’s first customer A380 aircraft rolled out of the paint hangar in Hamburg, Germany, on 2nd May 2007.

The entire surface area of the aircraft fuselage was “polished” by hand by some 100 painters working four shifts. The whole paint process took 21 days to complete.

Over 2,200 litres of chromate-free paint was used for painting the aircraft that has a surface area of 3100 m². The wafer-thin paint coat measures just 0.12mm and is able to withstand differences in temperatures from -60 to over 40 degrees Celsius.

Airbus is applying some of the most modern and environmental friendly techniques for the A380 painting process. Electrostatic pistols are used to minimize paint mist. Used air is cleaned and washed through a multi-stage cleaning process to ensure that paint particles are disposed separately.

Singapore Airlines is the launch customer for the A380 aircraft and after delays is now scheduled to take delivery of this aircraft in October 2007. The Airline has 19 A380s on firm order.

Takulla used the unlimited booking service offered by the Indian Railway Authority so that he could attend the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Indian Independence.

Pilgrims to the Tirupathi Temple in Andhra Pradesh. India, which attracts an average of 30,000 visitors per day, donate their hair as a form of sacrifice. Lal Bihari overcame the handicap of being dead, and managed to obtain a passport from the Indian government so that he could travel to Harvard to accept his Prize. However, the U.S. government refused to allow him into the country. His friend Madhu Kapoor therefore came to the Ig Nobel Ceremony and accepted the Prize on behalf of Lal Bihari. Space Shuttle Discovery and a crew of seven astronauts lifted off Saturday from Kennedy Space Center at 8:47 p.m. EST. After reaching orbit, Discovery’s crew set to work to open the payload bay doors, set up computers and equipment and check out the shuttle’s robotic arm. Heat shield inspections will begin Sunday with a station docking scheduled for Monday at 5:05 p.m.

The STS-116 crew members will dock to the International Space Station, install the new P5 truss structure and perform three spacewalks to rewire the station for electricity generated by a solar array delivered in September.

STS-116 will also swap crew members when mission specialist Sunita Williams becomes a flight engineer for Expedition 14. Taking Williams’ place aboard Discovery for the ride home is European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Reiter who has lived aboard the station since July.
